Seat Slipcover

There are many types of seat slipcovers for sale, but it’s easy enough to make one. To create your own, it’s important to prepare the following equipment.

Required Tools and Materials

Tape measure
Pins
Fabric
Muslin
Sewing machine

Step 1

Measure the chair length, height, width, seat-cushion, and back. Do this before you buy the muslin.

Step 2

Slice the fabric to the required figures. Add half an inch to every side you’ll cut. This will be the mock fabric you’ll use for the pattern.

Step 3

Set the muslin at the chairs. Make certain the measurements fit. Slice off any additional fabrics apart from the ½ inch you cut earlier.

Step 4

Take off the seat slipcovers mock pattern and stitch it in the sewing machine. You will end up with a complete cover for the chair. Place the muslin cover over the chair. Pull the cover until it fits properly. If everything fits, take off the cover. Remove the seams.

Step 5

Now look for a fabric that will match your décor. When looking for fabrics, make sure there is stretch but not too much it becomes hard to handle. Avoid using heavy fabrics. They are difficult to sew and are not suited for those new to sewing.

Step 6

Set the fabric down with the wrong side facing you. Pin the muslin to this side (the wrong side).

Step 7

Slice the fabric at the muslin template edge. This will give you a fabric pattern similar to the muslin. Stitch the fabric along the seam lines just like the muslin template. The seam allowances are
the extra half inch you made earlier.

Step 8

When the seams are sewn, chop off any excess material. Hem the edges as necessary. Turn the cover inside out; the right side will come out. Now pull the cover over the seat. Pull the edges until everything fits properly.

Tips and Warnings

Work with machine washable fabrics so they are easier to clean. When cleaning, take care not to let the covers shrink. This can happen when the covers are inside the dryer. As always, the quality of the fabrics will determine how long they endure. Always go for the highest quality so your money doesn’t get wasted.

Making seat slipcovers is not as difficult as it seems. With a bit of patience, you’ll have customized covers for all your chairs and couches. You just need to be a little creative.
