Futon Slipcover

By making a futon slipcover you will be able to use even an old futon as a spare bed or couch. Even if the mattress is old you will still be able to use it by applying a few simple sewing techniques.

Required Tools and Materials

Material (fabric, color and style up to you)
Snaps and other fasteners
Sewing machine
Tape or straight pins
Thread and needles
Scissors
Paper
Pen
Measuring tape

Step 1

Remove the mattress from the futon. Record the mattress length, width, height or thickness. Change the measurements from inches to yards. One yard is equal to 36 inches. After you have the measurements, buy the necessary amount of fabric, needles, thread and fasteners.

Step 2

Don’t use the fabric until it has been washed. This step is necessary to set the colors and to keep the fabric from shrinking. Fabrics have different washing instructions so follow the directions as specified in the package. Let the fabric dry for as long as necessary.

Step 3

Begin to make the futon slipcover by putting the fabric on the floor with the design side facing down. If necessary put a blanket below it and smooth the fabric. Ensure the fabric is flat.

Step 4

Place the futon on the fabric. Ensure the sides are the same distance from the fabric edges. Use the measuring tape to avoid mistakes.

Step 5

Fold the fabric and pin on the mattress (or you can tape it). Apply as many pins or tape as needed because the mattress has to be flipped to assess the fitting.

Step 6

Tuck the fabric at the corners and pin the folds. Make sure the corners are secure when you take off the fabric to stitch and connect it to the fasteners.

Step 7

Flip the mattress and ensure the material is stretched. Make sure the fit is correct so there is no wrinkling or sagging. Flex the mattress and make all the necessary adjustments. Flip the mattress over and note where the fasteners will be put in place.

Step 8

Take off the cover and stitch the folds. You can hand stitch it or use a sewing machine. Hand stitching is recommended only for those with sewing experience as it will take a while.

What these instructions for making futon slipcovers show is how easily you can save money by making covers instead of just buying them. The time and effort you put in will make a big difference both financially and in terms of improving your sewing skills.
