Contemporary Slipcovers
Contemporary slipcovers, like the traditional ones, are designed to protect chairs, sofas and loveseats from dust and dirt. However, these covers can also be used for decorating the furniture. Instead of buying a new couch, these covers can be used to give them a makeover.
Cover Fabrics and Colors
Modern covers can be made from different materials. They include faux leather, microfiber, polyester, denim, cotton or a combination of various materials. No matter which you select, make certain the fabric is durable.
After all, the primary purpose of the cover is to protect your furniture. This becomes even more important if there are children or pets running around the house.
Costs will vary depending on where you buy. Another factor that affects the price is the fabric weight. Heavy fabrics and those specially treated will cost more.
The type you buy affects price too. A sofa cover will cost more than chair covers because sofas require more fabrics. The multi-piece fabrics are more expensive than the one-piece because they have individual pieces.
Covers come in a variety of colors, from red, black, white, beige etc. Some have stripes and others have patterns.
Size Considerations
Contemporary slipcovers fit very well on round arm furniture with rectangle seat cushions. All covers are 114 in from the front to the back edge. Those designed for chairs range from 32 to 40 in wide. If you want to cover loveseats, look for covers measuring 58 to 73 in wide. Measure your furniture before you buy a cover.
How to Put the Covers on
Put the cover on the furniture. Fold the material into the sides. If you bought a two-piece cover, you can put the cushions in the covers. If necessary, use a wooden spoon to fold the excessive fabric. This should not be a problem if the material is snug.
The covers should remain in place once set. However, it may need to be tucked in every now and then. Consider buying stretch covers, as they can lessen tucking. Note: if the foot or arm rests are worn out, place a quilt over them before applying the cover.
How to Clean the Covers
Modern covers require cleaning just like the traditional types. Follow the directions as indicated in the package. As a rule, you need to vacuum or dust weekly.
If there are spills, spot cleaning is recommended. You can also take off the covers for laundry cleaning (warning: do not wash the cover if the tag says it has to be dry cleaned).
If you will wash the cloth yourself, make sure the washing machine is not overloaded. After washing, check the material for any tangles. When it is dry, put it on the furniture as you did before.
Take a look at various stores before buying. If you find a style you like in store A, check out store B; they may offer the same product at a lower cost. Once you find the items you like, you can purchase those contemporary slipcovers and redecorate your furniture.
