When shopping, give it a good squeeze. Does it wrinkle easily? Remember too that smooth draping fabrics flow smoother. If you are buying high end linen like taffeta, organza or organdy, they need to remain crisp.

Only buy the best contemporary fabrics you can afford; good quality fabrics will last longer and save money in the long run. The craftsmanship and style must be accounted for too. Your comfort level must always be a priority. If the fabric will be used for the couch, make sure it is a material you are comfortable with.

The stretching should be examined too. Do not buy fabrics until the elasticity has satisfied your requirements. Always follow the cleaning instructions otherwise the material will discolor, expand, shrink or disintegrate quickly.

Fabrics and Their Properties

Rayon, linen and cotton have the potential to expand or shrink if not handled properly. Cotton, linen and silk are susceptible to bleeding. Preshrinking woven cotton is needed prior to cutting so the 2% shrinkage can be avoided. You can wet the fabric by machine or hand and drip dry.

Unless stated otherwise, cotton can be washed in a machine. To avoid color loss, cool or warm water should be used. Don’t use hot water. Wrinkles can be limited by using fabric softeners.

There are many other modern fabrics you can choose from. Before you buy one, make sure to read all the instructions for using them. The instructions for cleaning cotton are not applicable to vinyl and other fabrics. The instructions will be included in the package so read it first.
